In brief.

  • A community member of the r/ethstaker Reddit community predicted that an ethereum merger could happen in June of this year
  • This prediction outlines five reasons why June is a reasonable timeframe for a merger between the current proof-of-work ethereum mainnet and beacon chains using proof-of-stake

The much-anticipated conversion of Ether from a proof-of-work network to a proof-of-stake algorithm is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2022. The process will involve merging the existing main Ethernet network with Ether's beacon chain 2.0 system.

However, no exact date has been provided for the "merger," leading a Reddit member of the r/ethstaker community (u/superphiz) to predict that it will happen in June of this year.

In a detailed article on Reddit, u/superphiz outlines the following five reasons why June is the logical month for the merger to happen.

First, on February 19, at EthDenver, Danny Ryan, an Ether researcher and implementation organizer, gave a talk in which he explained that the merger was very close. He also added that "the difficulty bomb… will detonate …… start to be felt …… sometime in June, sometime in July". According to u/superphiz, Danny Ryan hinted that the difficulty bomb will not be adjusted in June.

Second, discussions around the Kiln Tesnet launch during the 83rd Consensus Tier conference call on March 10 implied that its launch would be completed in a matter of days. u/superphiz noted that "the fact that implementers are counting days tells us that they are working hard to meet the June target." The Kiln test network is intended to be the last major test network before the merger and will run for three months.

Third, the Merge master network preparation list is nearing completion and the most difficult items have been completed. Therefore, the merger should happen soon.

Fourth, on March 10, Marius Van Der Wijden announced the launch of the Kiln public merger test network. The significance of this announcement was noted by u/superphiz through the following statement.

Anyone who has observed these events previously will know that these testnets have been merged with products that are ready for release. While I do not know the planned timing of these test net launches, it is very reasonable to expect a two week delay between each test net merger.

Coincidentally, the configuration of the Kiln test network is Announcement Today, March 11.

Finally, the aforementioned difficulty bomb is expected to "explode" around June 2022, which will give developers an incentive to either implement the merger or perform a hard fork to postpone it again.

All in all, the merger of the main Ethernet network with the beacon chain of Ether 2.0 is scheduled to happen sometime in the second quarter of 2022. The exact date is unknown, but June looks likely for beacon chain development and testing to progress due to the difficulty bombs happening and ongoing at the time.
