Irreplaceable tokens (NFTs) became particularly popular in 2021, and the trend continues in 2022, albeit at a slower pace. Users flock to create, sell and collect various NFTs for a variety of reasons. Some of them enjoy the art, others try to speculate on their value, a third is used as part of a blockchain-based game, and so on.

Whatever the reason – it seems that NFT is here to stay. Naturally, Ether became the dominant network it was created for and the ERC-721 token standard continues to lead the market. However, this has also led to network congestion, huge fees and slow transaction processing times, while other blockchains seem to be a logical alternative as users look for cheaper and faster solutions.

One of them is Solana. In fact, Solana is thriving in the irreplaceable token space as more and more creators seek out ethereum alternatives to launch their NFT projects. In this guide, we'll explain step-by-step how to mint NFTs on Solana – specifically on Solsea, the network's largest NFT marketplace.

Quick Navigation

What are minted coins?

Minting is the process of tokenizing digital files with cryptocurrency science, and tokenization is the process of turning assets into digital tokens that can be moved, stored and recorded on the blockchain. You can convert almost any digital file to a token – mp3, mp4, jpeg, WAV, PNG, GIF, etc.

Don't worry about the technical process now – you'll master it when we read this guide.

How to Cast NFT in Solana's Solsea Marketplace

There are several NFT marketplaces on Solana, such as Solanart, Magic Eden, or Solport, but for now, we will be casting on Solsea – the first and most popular NFT marketplace on Solana. We will also be using Phantom, an unmanaged digital currency package and browser extension commonly known as MetaMask for Solana.

Let's take it step by step. First, set up your wallet.

1 – Installing Phantom

If you don't have Phantom installed yet, go to and download it as an extension for your browser. In this case, we are using Brave.

Once added to your browser, you will see the Phantom icon on the Extensions button in the upper right corner. Click on the icon and continue with the installation.

You will be redirected to a new page. Click Create New Wallet.

You will receive a secret recovery phrase that you will use to recover your account in case you need to reinstall it on another device later. This is the most important step in creating your wallet – if you lose the phrase or write it wrong – you will not be able to recover your wallet and you may lose your funds. So make sure you write it and keep it in a safe place and remember.

Never keep your private keys on your PC Never share your keywords with anyone, this will give them full control over the funds

Also, Phantom is not currently available for Android, so be aware of phishing and fake apps.

Once completed, Phantom will be added to your browser. You can easily access it by clicking the Phantom icon on the menu bar.

2 – Fund your wallet

To start casting, we will need Solana's native cryptocurrency SOL. If you have SOL on a cryptocurrency exchange such as Coinbase, you must send funds to your Phantom wallet. To do this, just click the $ icon.

Select SOL and click on Deposit

You can top up your wallet by scanning the QR code or by copying and pasting the address below the QR code.

After your wallet is funded, you can start casting NFT on Solana.

Create a new account on Solsea

The next step is to create an account on Solsea. You can do this by connecting your wallet to the platform. Simply click on the Connect Wallet option in the upper right corner and select Phantom.

Phantom will pop up on your screen and request permission to link your wallet. Solsea will have the right to view your funds and activity on your wallet and request transaction approval.

After connecting, you will be redirected to Solsea's login page. Enter your email account and cryptocurrency.

Agree to the terms and conditions and then click Register. Solsea will send you an email to confirm your Solsea account. Once completed, your wallet will be automatically connected to the Solsea platform.

Now you're ready to go The next few steps will show you the actual minting process.

Creating an NFT set

2. Choose a title and add a description for your collection.

3. Upload the title and icon image.

4. If you want more people to interact with you and your future work, you can add your social media accounts and website.

When you are ready, click on "Create Collection" and sign the transaction to mint the collection. Please note that you may see a pop-up message stating that the minting transaction failed – this may be an error on Solsea's end and you may need to wait a few moments to complete the transaction.

If you are not sure if a transaction was approved, go to your wallet and select SOL and view the transaction history or use any Solana block browser.

After the transaction is confirmed, go to your wallet and click on My Favorites. It should look something like this.

Cast your first NFT on Solsea

2. Upload files. Acceptable formats are JPEG, PNG or GIF (images) and MOV or MP4 (videos). Make sure you read the supported file formats first. For the purpose of this guide, we will upload a picture of our awesome laser-eyed potato.

Next, select a title and add a description for your NFT.

4. Now, we have the option to set up a royalty payment. This is the percentage you earn as the creator each time you resell your NFT on the secondary market.

The percentages range from 0% to 50%, and you can set them according to your business model.

The next field is not mandatory, but is highly recommended, such as an external link to your work page – if you have one – so that people can see more of your work.

When it comes to tags – in our case, a plain image – so choose the correct tag for your file type (if it's mp4, then choose video.) Once cast and shelved, your NFT can search based on its tags.

Solsea is also the first NFT marketplace to embed licenses on NFT. These licenses will allow you to specify the products to be sold and the buyer knows exactly what they are buying. If you are still unsure, please read here.

If you have previously created an NFT collection, you can add a new NFT by selecting it from the Collection drop-down bar.

Finally, you must add features, but be careful, because once they are generated they cannot be changed.

You got it. Now click View Your Mint to see your new NFT.

Unlike MetaMask, your NFT will automatically be added to your Phantom wallet. Go look at the $ icon next to it. However, remember that once you list your NFT on Solsea, it will disappear from your wallet.

This takes us to the next step, shelving your NFT.

Simply go to your wallet and click "NFT in My Wallet" on the drop-down bar.

Click on "Add to NFT" and select a price.

When you're done, go back to My Wallet and view your listed NFTs.

That's pretty much it. Remember, every time your NFT is sold on the secondary market, you get a percentage of the proceeds (which goes directly to your wallet.)

Casting NFTs on Solana is very simple and does not require special coding knowledge. In this respect, the process is very similar to how to cast NFTs on OpenSea.

All in all, Solana is one of the leading blockchains as far as NFT is concerned, and being able to take advantage of this is a must for anyone looking to succeed in the digital art world. However, it is not without its problems. The network has experienced multiple outages and can also slow down considerably when overloaded – just like Ether.
