On Friday, Yuga Labs, the company behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) irreplaceable token (NFT) series, announced that it has acquired the intellectual property behind the Cryptopunks and Meebits brands. In addition, after acquiring the IP from Larva Labs, Yuga has decided to grant "full commercial rights to NFT holders".

During the last year and 2022, irreplaceable tokens (NFTs) seem to have become a mainstay of the cryptocurrency industry. In terms of historical sales, one of the teams behind the fifth largest NFT collection, Bored Ape Yacht Club, announced the acquisition of IP related to two other popular NFT collections. These two collections happen to be the Cryptopunks and Meebits collections released by Larva Labs.

The team tweeted on Yuga Labs' official Twitter account.

Some big news to share today: Yuga has acquired the CryptoPunks and Meebits collections from Larva Labs, and the first thing we’re going to do is offer full commercial rights to NFT holders. Just like we did for BAYC and MAYC owners.

"What's good for punk is good for apes."

While BAYC is the fifth largest NFT program by historical sales (ATSV), the dappradar.com NFT collection statistics show that Meebits holds the record for highest ATSV today with $7.54 billion ATSV. Meebits' sister project Cryptopunks is below the series with an ATSV of $2.65 billion, while BAYC's ATSV is $1.41 billion. Yuga's Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) ranks ninth with $895.53 million in ATSV at the time of this writing.

There are 10,000 different Cryptopunk irreplaceable tokens issued on the Ether blockchain. The series was launched in June 2017 by Larva Labs, the NFT studio created by John Watkinson and Matt Hall, co-founders of Meebits and Cryptopunks.

In a Twitter post Friday, Yuga noted that the team has "always admired" the founders of Cryptopunks and Larva Labs. "They have driven the NFT and broader cryptocurrency world forward, and we are honored to bring the brand they have built into the future we are building at Yuga," the team added. Yuga's tweetstorm further insisted that the BAYC ecosystem "will remain the center of the company's Cosmos."

"We believe that what's good for Punks is good for Apes and other spaces. Likewise, what's good for Apes is good for Punks. We want to make the pie bigger, not fight for slices," Yuga's statement concluded.
