The federal government announced that Nigerian home-grown airlines Air Peace and Max Air will begin picking up Nigerians now safely entering neighboring countries from Ukraine this week.

The disclosure was made by Nigerian Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama and released in a statement by Tolu Ogunlesi, media assistant in the presidency.

All those who can leave Ukraine will be evacuated, he said.

FG on withdrawing Nigerians

The minister said in an interview that cash flights to Nigeria are expected to begin this week from Ukraine's neighboring countries via Air Peace and Max Air.

Minister Ogunlethi was quoted as saying, "There are about 5,600 Nigerian students in Ukraine and about 8,000 Nigerians in total.

"About 1,000 Nigerians are currently entering Romania from Ukraine. They will be airlifted in the coming days. (People also managed to cross into Poland and Hungary, as well as about 150 people in Sumy, Ukraine, where Russia is their nearest border).

"The Nigerian government will arrange charter flights for Air Peace and Max Air from countries around Ukraine in the coming days."

The presidential spokesman also noted that not all Nigerians in Ukraine may want to leave or withdraw, on the grounds that the FG said all those who want and are able to leave to neighboring countries (Ukrainian airspace is currently closed to commercial flights), will be evacuated.
