For cryptocurrency venture investors, 2021 is a landmark year.

The deluge of capital injected into cryptocurrency companies last year in excess of $28.65 billion was bolstered by the launch of a new billion-dollar fund, increased venture capital investment in cryptocurrency companies, and investor appetite for a general risk environment, giving way to a new class of angel investors in the market.

But the risks are greater in 2022, with the cryptocurrency market shrinking by billions of dollars in market capitalization on news of potentially higher interest rates due to inflation, coupled with increased geopolitical uncertainty, leading to volatility in its own price across the market.

That pullback has begun to permeate the private cryptocurrency market, according to venture capitalist Darren Lau, who founded cryptocurrency education resource The Daily Ape and runs venture capital firm Not3Lau Capital. Lau has backed projects including Nansen, Trader Joe and Mixmob. He was also an early investor in Solana early investor.

"I've talked to a couple of programs recently, like just this week, who told me that even though these venture capitalists committed to this round of funding a month ago, two months ago, they're removing the deal market based on how it looks right now," Liu said in the latest issue of The Scoop.

They were also more selective than before. "So there were more venture capitalists spouting water and praying," Liu added.

The "spray and pray" approach – which involves investors making large pledges in the hope of huge upside – no longer seems to be a favorite in today's market.

Liu said, "People are being more cautious with their capital."

In this centralization of The Scoop, Lau and Frank Chaparro discuss.

  • Liu’s venture capital approach and his decision making process for making venture capital investments
  • How he uses bots to automate his investment process and search the Discord channel for hot deals
  • How he got involved with Solana early on and what he sees as the future of the project
  • How DAOs have evolved over the years, and why they’ve become a hot buzzword
