A new decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) called AssangeDAO has raised millions of dollars to bid on irreplaceable tokens (NFTs) and help WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange gain freedom through legal efforts.

To date, DAO has raised 1,623 ETH ($4.6 million).

AssangeDAO states that it is "supporting the liberation of Julian Assange". The organization aims to raise funds to help pay legal fees and carry out activities to "raise public awareness of the systemic failures of our justice system".

The website states.

“We, the cryptocurrency punks, are rallying for a fellow cryptocurrency punk in trouble. […] AssangeDAO intends to raise funds to bid on Assange’s NFT.”

Their efforts are similar to and inspired by FreeRossDAO, which was founded in early December 2021 to raise funds to free Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the dark web marketplace Silk Road.

Similarly, AssangeDAO began creating a Telegram group last December 10, the day the U.S. government won an appeal of a British court ruling barring Assange's extradition to the United States, the group said. Soon after, Assange's brother Gabriel Shipton joined and told the group that the WikiLeaks founder was working on an NFT collaboration that would be auctioned off to raise money for his campaign.

Popular digital artist Pak is reportedly working with the WikiLeaks founder to release a new NFT collection called "Censored. The collection is scheduled to go live on February 7, which is also the date of Assange's court appearance.

Last January, a judge ruled that Assange should not be sent to the United States to face espionage and hacking charges, but she also denied bail, saying Assange "still has an incentive to avoid these pending lawsuits. "

After his expulsion from the Ecuadorian embassy, Assange was held for 18 months in Belmarsh prison in southeast London, where he sought asylum for seven years.
